FAST FACTS AND RITUALS ABOUT NAG PANCHAMI
Nag Panchami, a revered Hindu festival, is dedicated to the worship of the snake god. Celebrated with devotion and traditional rituals, this festival holds immense significance for devotees.
Nag Panchami Fast
- Observance: Devotees fast to please the snake god.
- Duration: The fast begins at sunrise and ends at sunset.
- Food Restrictions: Fried and salty foods are avoided.
- Extended Fasting: In some areas, devotees start fasting a day before the festival.
- Breaking the Fast: The fast is broken only after offering “kheer” to the snake god. The food consumed to break the fast should be prepared the previous day.
Rituals of Nag Panchami
- Traditional Attire: After an early morning bath, devotees wear traditional clothes. Women often don the “Nauvaari” saree.
- Snake Idols: Idols are crafted or bought, made from clay, milk, turmeric, grass, kum kum, and flowers.
- Offerings: Flowers and milk are placed near snake holes for the snakes to feast on.
- Women’s Practices: Married women visit their premarital homes, while unmarried women fast for good fortune and to attract the right partner.
- Sweets and Offerings: Coconut sweets, black sesame ladoos, and other mithais are offered to the snake gods.
- Red Hibiscus Flowers: These are an essential part of the pooja samagri and are placed at the feet of the idol.
- Aarti and Mantras: Devotees chant Nag Mantras during the aarti, with sandalwood aroma pleasing the snake god.
- Field Restrictions: Ploughing, digging, and cutting grass/crops are prohibited to avoid harming snakes.
- Prasad Distribution: Sweets offered to the snake god are distributed as prasad.
- Worship of Goddess Manasa Devi: She is also worshipped on this day across various parts of India.
Historical Practices
In ancient times, women offered milk to real snakes, believing that if the snake drank the milk, it would bring good fortune to the family. However, for safety reasons and concerns about milk harming snakes, this practice has been discontinued.
