THE POWER OF DEVOTION: HOW THE GOPIS HEALED KRISHNA ON HIS BIRTHDAY
On a radiant day, as preparations were underway for a grand celebration of Lord Krishna’s birthday, something unusual occurred. The air was thick with excitement, with music, dance, and festivities planned to honor the beloved deity. People from far and wide gathered to take part in the joyous occasion, eager to celebrate Krishna’s divine presence. Yet, to everyone’s surprise, Krishna, who was always at the heart of every celebration, remained indoors, refusing to join the festivities.
Concerned by this strange behavior, Rukmini, Krishna’s devoted wife, approached him and gently asked, “My Lord, why do you sit here when the world awaits your presence? What troubles you?” Krishna, who was always full of life and laughter, responded with a pained expression, “I have a headache.” Whether this headache was real or a playful pretense, no one could say for sure, for Krishna was known for his playful nature.
Immediately, Rukmini called for the best physicians, who rushed to Krishna’s side with remedies and medicines. But Krishna, shaking his head, said, “These treatments won’t help me.” The word spread quickly among the devotees, and soon, Satyabama, Narada, and many others gathered around, anxious to find a cure. “What can we do to ease your pain?” they asked.
Krishna replied with a surprising request: “If someone who truly loves me takes the dust from their feet and places it on my head, I will be cured.” Shock swept through the crowd. Satyabama, one of his closest companions, was appalled. “I love you deeply, Krishna, but how can I commit such a sacrilegious act? I cannot place the dust of my feet on your divine head.” Rukmini, too, was distressed, tears filling her eyes. “How could we ever do such a thing?” Even the wise sage Narada hesitated, thinking, “This must be a test. Who knows what consequences await if I do this? I might be condemned to hell for eternity!”
The news of Krishna’s headache and the unusual cure he requested spread like wildfire, and everyone was left in a state of horror and disbelief. Despite their love for Krishna, no one dared to fulfill his request. The celebration came to a standstill, as Krishna sat quietly, seemingly in pain, waiting for someone to act out of pure love.
Finally, the news reached Vrindavan, the land of Krishna’s childhood and the home of his beloved Gopis. When Radha and the Gopis heard that Krishna had a headache, they did not hesitate. Radha immediately spread her pallu on the ground, and all the Gopis danced upon it with unreserved joy and devotion. They cared not for the consequences; their only thought was to ease Krishna’s pain. After dancing, they gathered the dust from the pallu and handed it to Narada, saying, “Take this to Krishna. It will surely heal him.”
Narada, marveling at their devotion, carried the dust to Krishna and tied it around his head. Instantly, the headache vanished, and Krishna’s radiant smile returned. The pure, selfless love of the Gopis had worked a miracle. Krishna, who had rejected kingdoms and riches, valued this simple act of love above all else. The Gopis’ devotion was more precious to him than the wealth of all the worlds.
