THE 5 BEST SHOUJO HEROINES IN ANIME

Shoujo anime, a genre aimed primarily at young women, spans many genres from fantasy to slice-of-life. Typically featuring female protagonists, these stories resonate deeply with their target demographic. Over the years, shoujo anime has introduced us to heroines of various ages and backgrounds, from high school girls fighting demons to adults working to support their families. While some heroines are less than stellar, others shine brightly, winning our hearts and admiration. Here are the five best shoujo heroines in anime, along with five we couldn't stand. And don’t forget to check out your favorite anime merch store for anime merchandise like anime figures, anime hoodie, and anime clothes to show your support for these characters.

5. Satou Matsuzaka (Happy Sugar Life)

Satou Matsuzaka from Happy Sugar Life is a character who probably should be reported to Child Protective Services rather than attending high school. Satou has sworn to protect Shio, a little girl of unknown age who lives in her apartment, never allowing her outside.

Satou is in love with a little girl, has a two-faced personality, and is a murderer. Her aunt’s influence made her crazy, but that’s no excuse for her horrendous actions. Satou is a prime example of a heroine we couldn't stand. For those fascinated by this controversial character, you might find unique anime merchandise related to her in an anime store near you.

4. Misaki Ayuzawa (Kaichou wa Maid-Sama!)

Misaki Ayuzawa from Kaichou wa Maid-Sama! was a great heroine when she debuted, and she remains an amazing heroine to this day. It's understandable why Takumi finds her so attractive. Misaki is the usually stone-faced and serious student council president at school but works at a maid cafe after school to support her impoverished family.

She doesn’t easily fall for Takumi’s teasing but shows a surprisingly girly side that she typically conceals. Misaki’s strength and complexity make her a standout heroine. You can celebrate her character with anime merch from an anime store.

3. Erika Shinohara (Wolf Girl and Black Prince)

Erika Shinohara from Wolf Girl and Black Prince is a heroine(?) who is hard to root for. Firstly, she lies to her so-called friends about having a boyfriend to fit in. Secondly, she snaps a picture of the most popular boy in school (how does she not know of him?) and asks him to lie.

Lastly, she agrees to become his dog and falls in love with him because he protected her from a guy just as bad as him. Erika’s lack of self-worth and questionable decisions make her a heroine we couldn’t stand. Yet, fans of the series can still find anime clothes and anime figures featuring her in an anime store. GET YOUR MERCH HERE!

2. Kyouko Mogami (Skip Beat!)

Kyouko Mogami from Skip Beat! is a timeless example of what the shoujo genre needs more of: a powerful, no-nonsense, and hardworking heroine we can all cheer for, regardless of gender.

After being scorned by her childhood friend who treated her as a maid, Kyouko decides to get revenge by beating him at his own game: showbiz. As she realizes her genuine interest in the craft, she works even harder. Kyouko is easy to like and cheer on, making her an essential shoujo heroine. Celebrate her journey with anime merchandise from an anime merch store.

1. Heroine (Amnesia)

Finally, we come to the worst shoujo heroine: a character not even worth a name — Heroine from Amnesia. Fans often call this series "sexual harassment the anime." Since she doesn’t speak in the otome game it’s based on, she barely says anything in the anime.

Over twelve episodes, she speaks fewer than ten words. While the main character should be the best part of an anime, Heroine’s staleness and lack of personality make her the shoujo heroine we can't stand the most. Despite her lackluster character, you might still find some anime merch related to Amnesia in an anime store near by.

Shoujo heroines come in all shapes and sizes, and while some may falter, others rise to the occasion, inspiring us with their strength and determination. Your local anime store is the perfect place to find what you need to celebrate these beloved heroines.
