Overcome with grief, Parvati asked Lord Shiva to revive her son, but he could only do so by replacing Lord Ganesha's head with that of another creature. The first creature that was found was an elephant, and thus, Lord Ganesha was reborn with the head of an elephant. This event is believed to have occurred on the fourth day of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, and thus, the day is celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi.
