LORD KRISHNA SAVES NANDA MAHARAJA

LORD KRISHNA SAVES NANDA MAHARAJA

As the festive spirit of Janmashtami fills the air, it’s a time to recall the divine pastimes of the Supreme Lords and celebrate their timeless stories. One such powerful tale from the Srimad Bhagavatam recounts how Lord Krishna, the beloved deity of Vrindavan, came to the rescue of His father, Nanda Maharaja, who had been taken captive by Varuna, the god of the seas.

The Govardhana Ceremony and the Wrath of Indra

The narrative begins with the famous Govardhana ceremony, which took place on the new moon day. Following this event, torrential rains and hailstorms, inflicted by a furious King Indra, besieged Vrindavan for seven days. On the tenth day after the Govardhana Puja, Lord Krishna’s might and divine intervention forced Indra to surrender and worship Him, bringing an end to the storm.

Nanda Maharaja's Ordeal with Varuna

Following this, the eleventh day brought the observance of Ekadasi, where Nanda Maharaja, Krishna’s father, fasted devoutly. Early the next morning on Dvadasi, he ventured to the River Yamuna for his ritualistic bath. However, due to an unfortunate miscalculation, he entered the waters at an inauspicious time, which, according to celestial rules, was deemed demoniac. Consequently, Nanda Maharaja was apprehended by Varuna’s servants and taken to the underwater realm of the sea god.

Krishna's Divine Rescue

When the cowherd men discovered Nanda Maharaja’s predicament, they called out to Lord Krishna and Balarama in desperation. Krishna, ever the protector of His devotees, immediately understood the situation and set out with Balarama to confront Varuna. Upon their arrival, Varuna, overwhelmed with respect and awe, greeted the two Lords with great reverence. He humbly apologized to Krishna for the mistake made by his servants and sought forgiveness for the wrongful detention of Nanda Maharaja.

Varuna, recognizing Lord Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, returned Nanda Maharaja unharmed. Nanda Maharaja, however, was astonished by the reverence shown by the mighty Varuna to his son, Krishna. Despite witnessing these divine events, Nanda and Yashoda continued to see Krishna not as the Supreme Lord but as their dear child, which further deepened their loving relationship with Him.

A Glimpse into the Spiritual Realm

After rescuing Nanda Maharaja, Lord Krishna led him and the other cowherd men to the sacred lake where Akrura would later have a vision of the Vaikuntha planetary system. There, they all took a purifying bath and experienced the bliss of witnessing the spiritual sky and the Vaikunthalokas. Filled with awe and divine joy, they emerged from the waters to behold Lord Krishna, who was being worshiped with beautiful prayers.
