THE DIVINE BIRTH OF LORD GANESHA

THE DIVINE BIRTH OF LORD GANESHA

On a serene day at Mt. Kailash, Goddess Parvati prepared for a bath and desired complete privacy. She instructed Nandi, the loyal bull of her husband Shiva, to guard the door and prevent anyone from entering. Dutifully, Nandi took his position, determined to follow Parvati’s command. However, when Shiva returned home, Nandi, loyal to Shiva above all, allowed him to pass. This upset Parvati, as she realized she lacked a loyal companion of her own.

To rectify this, Parvati took the turmeric paste used for her bath, breathed life into it, and created Ganesha. She declared Ganesha to be her loyal son and assigned him to guard the door the next time she wished to bathe. When Shiva arrived home and encountered this unfamiliar boy barring his entry, he was furious. Despite ordering his army to remove the boy, Ganesha, endowed with divine strength from Parvati, easily defeated them.

Recognizing that this boy was no ordinary being, Shiva, in a rare display of anger, decided to confront Ganesha himself. In the ensuing clash, Shiva severed Ganesha’s head, instantly killing him. Parvati, upon discovering what had happened, was overwhelmed with grief and fury. She threatened to destroy the entire creation, prompting Lord Brahma, the Creator, to intervene and plead with her.

Parvati agreed to reconsider her drastic plan on two conditions: Ganesha must be brought back to life, and he must be worshipped before all other gods. Shiva, remorseful and eager to appease Parvati, accepted these terms. He instructed Brahma to bring the head of the first creature he encountered lying with its head facing north. Brahma returned with the head of a powerful elephant, which Shiva then placed on Ganesha's body. Breathing new life into him, Shiva declared Ganesha his own son and granted him the status of being foremost among the gods, the leader of all the ganas (classes of beings), hence the name Ganapati.
