THE FARMER AND THE SERPENT: A TALE OF NAAG PANCHAMI
In the rich tapestry of Hindu mythology, many stories highlight the significance of Naag Panchami. One such tale is the story of a farmer, his family, and a vengeful serpent. This story not only underscores the reverence for serpents but also the power of compassion and forgiveness.
In a serene village, a farmer lived with his two sons and a daughter. One day, while plowing his field, the farmer accidentally killed three baby snakes. The Naag (male snake) and Naagin (female snake) mourned the loss of their children deeply. Overwhelmed by grief, the Naagin decided to avenge their deaths. Under the cover of darkness, the Naagin crept into the farmer’s house and bit the farmer, his wife, and his two sons, causing their untimely deaths. The next morning, the Naagin approached the farmer's daughter, intending to bite her as well. The farmer's daughter, filled with fear and remorse, placed a bowl of milk in front of the Naagin and joined her hands in a plea for forgiveness. Touched by the girl's humility and sorrow, the Naagin’s anger subsided. She decided to show mercy and revived the farmer, his wife, and his sons.
This act of compassion occurred on the Panchami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan. From that day forward, to appease the serpents and avoid their wrath, people began to worship them on this day, marking the celebration of Naag Panchami.
The tale of the farmer and the serpent illustrates the importance of Naag Panchami in Hindu culture. Serpents, or Naags, are considered powerful and divine creatures. They are associated with various deities, including Lord Shiva, who is often depicted with a serpent around his neck. Worshipping serpents on Naag Panchami is believed to bring protection from snake bites and other dangers, as well as blessings for health and prosperity.
Naag Panchami is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm across India. Devotees offer milk, flowers, and sweets to snake idols or live snakes. In some regions, snake charmers bring cobras to the temples, where they are fed and worshipped. People also create intricate rangoli patterns featuring snake designs in front of their homes.
