UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SAWAN SHIVRATRI AND MAHA SHIVRATRI
The holy month of Sawan, also known as Shravan, thus year began on July 22. This fifth month of the Hindu calendar is considered the most auspicious time of the year. On 2nd August, 2024, devotees across India will celebrate Shravan Shivratri this year. On this day, worshippers observe fasts and perform various rituals to honor Lord Shiva, seeking his blessings. While Shivratri is observed monthly, known as Masik Shivratri, Sawan Shivratri holds particular significance.
The Legend Behind Sawan Shivratri
Sawan Shivratri is celebrated on the Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi Tithi. It is regarded as an auspicious festival across India. On this day, unmarried girls often fast, praying for an ideal husband like Lord Shiva. The 14th day of every lunar month is known as Shivratri, but Sawan Shivratri is unique due to its timing in the sacred month of Sawan.
According to Hindu mythology, Sawan Shivratri marks the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Parvati fasted and prayed rigorously to win the heart of Lord Shiva, who eventually agreed to marry her. This union represents the eternal bond of love and devotion between a husband and wife, making Sawan Shivratri particularly significant for unmarried women who pray for a good husband.
Maha Shivratri: The Great Night of Shiva
Maha Shivratri, on the other hand, is celebrated annually in the month of Phalguna (February-March). It is believed to be the night when Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. On Maha Shivratri, devotees stay awake all night, engaging in prayer and chanting hymns dedicated to Lord Shiva. The festival signifies overcoming darkness and ignorance in life and the world.
The legend behind Maha Shivratri is also deeply spiritual. It is said that on this night, Lord Shiva drank the poison that emerged from the ocean during the churning (Samudra Manthan) to save the world. His consort, Goddess Parvati, held his throat to prevent the poison from spreading, turning his throat blue and earning him the name Neelkantha. This act of sacrifice is commemorated on Maha Shivratri.
