Lord Shiva is often depicted with a snake coiled three times around His neck, facing His right side. This image is rich with symbolism, reflecting deep spiritual meanings. The three coils of the snake represent the past, present, and future – signifying the cycle of time in life. The snake looking to the right signifies that Lord Shiva's eternal laws of reason and justice maintain the natural order of the universe. This snake is believed to be Vasuki Naga, a formidable cobra.

According to the Puranas, during the churning of the ocean of milk (Samudra Manthan), a deadly poison (halahala) emerged, threatening the world. Lord Shiva drank this poison to save humanity. Some snakes, including Vasuki, drank the poison alongside Him. Vasuki also served as the rope tied to Mount Mandara during the churning process. Impressed by Vasuki's dedication, Shiva accepted him as an ornament around His neck. This act signifies Shiva's transcendence over time and death, showcasing His control over these elements.

Shiva, known as Pasupathinath (the Lord of all creatures), is also seen as the protector of the snake species. When snakes faced extinction, they sought refuge with Lord Shiva, who provided them shelter in Kailasa. Due to the cold weather, the snakes would coil around Shiva for warmth, and He wore them as an ornament to protect and comfort them. This symbolizes Shiva's dominion over all creatures and their behaviors. The snake, a feared and dangerous creature, symbolizes that even the most fearsome beings are under His control.

The snake also represents evil and demonic forces in the world. By wearing a snake around His neck, Lord Shiva assures us that no evil can harm us once we surrender to Him, seek His protection, and worship Him with deep devotion.

The snake signifies the dormant energy known as Kundalini Shakti, which resides in the Muladhara Chakra of all humans. This energy ascends as one embarks on a spiritual journey, becoming increasingly divine-oriented. The snake around Shiva's neck indicates that His Kundalini has fully arisen and is actively engaged in divine activities, watching over devotees who seek His help.

Furthermore, the snake symbolizes all passions and desires. By wearing snakes around His neck, Lord Shiva conveys to His devotees that He has conquered all desires and has complete control over Prakriti (nature) and its illusions (Maya).
