KRISHNA’S COSMIC REVELATION: THE MUD-EATING EPISODE
One day, the gopas (cowherd boys) complained to Mother Yashoda that they saw Krishna eating dirt in a secluded place. Concerned for her beloved child, Yashoda immediately asked Krishna why He had eaten dirt. Krishna, with innocent eyes, denied the accusation, saying, “I didn’t eat dirt. They are all speaking lies.” Yashoda, filled with love and worry, demanded, “If you didn’t eat dirt, then let me look into your mouth.”
The Divine Lie and the Cosmic Vision
How can the Absolute Truth tell lies? As the Supreme Truth, Krishna does not lie. However, as a playful child, Krishna's actions increase His mother’s vatsalyarasa (parental love). This expression of pure, heartfelt love is the highest truth on the liberated platform. When Krishna opened His mouth, Yashoda saw an astounding sight: all the planets, creatures, and demigods. She beheld the Viratrupa, the universal form of the Lord.
Yashoda was bewildered by this divine manifestation. She wondered if she was dreaming or if it was an illusion. Srila Prabhupada explains that when faced with situations beyond our understanding, a devotee seeks refuge in the Supreme Lord. When inconceivable challenges arise, a devotee calls out for Krishna’s mercy by chanting His holy names.
Yashoda Maiya began to pray to Supreme Lord Narayana. Krishna, seeing her devotion, smiled and covered her again with the power of Yoga Maya, making her forget the incident.
The Lesson from Krishna’s Mouth
Yashoda, with a wagging finger, scolded Krishna: “You shouldn’t eat dirt, you naughty boy.” The unchallenged Lord of all, disguised as a frightened human child, replied, “But I haven’t.” Yashoda insisted, “Tut! Tut! Open your mouth.” Krishna obeyed, and Yashoda gasped as she saw the entire universe within His mouth: all stars, planets, lands, seas, life, the past, the future, and all the emotions and ideas. She even saw herself and every bit of dirt in its place.
Realizing the cosmic truth, Yashoda collapsed, unconscious. Krishna knew that if Yashoda fully understood His divine nature, she would struggle to treat Him as her son. When she awoke, Yashoda embraced Krishna, hugging him joyfully.
