KRISHNA – THE ETERNAL GUIDE AND PROTECTOR IN THE MAHABHARATA
Friend, philosopher, guide – these three words epitomize the role that Lord Krishna plays in the Mahabharata. Krishna, an avatar of Vishnu, is the God of compassion and love. While Krishna’s early life is well documented in the Srimad Bhagavatam, written by Vyasa, which gives a complete insight into his personal life, the Mahabharata showcases his public life and his mission to rid the world of evil.
Krishna's Entry into the Mahabharata
Krishna enters the Mahabharata during Draupadi’s swayamvar. As a silent spectator in Drupad’s court, he watched as kings and princes failed the challenge to marry Draupadi. He observed as Arjuna, disguised as a Brahmin, won the challenge and took Draupadi as his bride. After Arjuna introduced Draupadi to his mother Kunti, Krishna arrived with expensive gifts for the Pandavas. When Yudhishthira asked about the gifts, Krishna explained that the glory of the Pandavas had been seen in King Drupad's court. Krishna, recognizing the greatness in the ordinary, was the only one who identified the Brahmins as the Pandavas.
Krishna's Support to the Pandavas
Krishna’s friendship with the Pandavas was unwavering, especially during their times of need. When the Pandavas returned to Hastinapur after exile, Duryodhana grudgingly gave them a barren piece of land, Khandavprastha. With Krishna’s help, the Pandavas transformed this desolate land into a magnificent kingdom with a palace that outshone Duryodhana’s abode.
Krishna’s selflessness shone again when the Pandavas returned from their second exile of 13 years, facing an inevitable war with the Kauravas. Krishna attempted to prevent the war by negotiating with Duryodhana, but his efforts were in vain.
Krishna as Philosopher and Guide
During the Kurukshetra war, Krishna transitioned from a friend to a philosopher and guide. He chose to be Arjuna’s charioteer, believing he could offer greater assistance in that role. Krishna's guidance was crucial when Arjuna hesitated to fight against his kin. Krishna enlightened Arjuna on the importance of duty and the greater good. Throughout the war, Krishna’s protection saved Arjuna in many battles.
A significant moment was when Krishna insisted Arjuna dismount the chariot first after the war. As soon as Krishna stepped down, the chariot burst into flames, revealing that it had been protected by Krishna’s divine presence. This act highlighted Krishna’s humility and his unspoken role in their victory.
Lessons from Krishna
Krishna’s character exemplifies true friendship, humility, and the value of service. He never wavered in his loyalty to the Pandavas and guided them to victory. Despite his strength to single-handedly win the war, he chose the humble role of a charioteer, demonstrating that no task is too small. Krishna teaches us the importance of serving others, as this is the way to contribute to the greater good.
