KRISHNA: THE PARTHASARATHI OF ARJUNA

After enduring 12 years of exile and one year of incognito, the Pandavas returned to reclaim their kingdom. However, Duryodhana refused to return Indraprastha, making a war between the Pandavas and Kauravas inevitable. Both sides began mobilizing their armies and seeking alliances with various kings.

In their quest for support, both Duryodhana and Arjuna sought the divine intervention of Lord Krishna and traveled to Dwaraka. Duryodhana arrived first and found Krishna asleep on His beautiful couch. There were seats on either side of the couch. Duryodhana, filled with ego, chose the seat near Krishna's head, avoiding sitting near His feet. Shortly after, Arjuna arrived. Seeing Krishna resting, Arjuna chose to stand humbly near His feet, with folded hands, patiently waiting for the Lord to wake up.

When Krishna opened His eyes, He first saw Arjuna standing near His feet and asked the purpose of his visit. Before Arjuna could speak, Duryodhana claimed he was the first to arrive and should be heard first. Krishna, aware of their intentions, told Duryodhana that since He saw Arjuna first and because Arjuna was younger, he would get the first choice.

Krishna presented two options: His mighty Narayani army of 10,000 warriors or Himself, unarmed and not participating in the battle. Given the first choice, Arjuna chose Krishna Himself. Duryodhana, thinking Arjuna foolish, happily chose the powerful Narayani army.

Krishna then asked Arjuna why he had chosen Him over the strong army. Arjuna, with deep devotion, explained that the mere presence of Lord Krishna was enough for the Pandavas to win. He humbly requested Krishna to be his charioteer and guide him to victory. Krishna, smiling, assured Arjuna of His support. Arjuna's choice proved wise, as the Lord’s divine guidance was instrumental in their success.

Since Krishna was the SARATHI (Charioteer) of PARTHA (Arjuna), He became known as PARTHASARATHI. This story beautifully exemplifies Krishna's role as a friend, philosopher, and guide, celebrating the divine connection on Janmashtami and the wisdom of choosing the Lord's presence over mere strength.

Krishna's role as Arjuna’s charioteer during the Kurukshetra war is one of the most profound aspects of the Mahabharata. His guidance and wisdom helped the Pandavas navigate the complex and challenging battle. Krishna's teachings, especially those imparted to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita, are revered as timeless spiritual guidance. Krishna’s divine presence was not just a source of moral and strategic support but also a symbol of divine grace and protection.

The tale of Parthasarathi, the divine charioteer, underscores the essence of faith, devotion, and the importance of divine guidance. Arjuna’s decision to choose Krishna over the formidable Narayani army demonstrates the power of having faith in the divine, valuing wisdom and guidance over sheer force. This choice was instrumental in the Pandavas' ultimate victory, showcasing that true strength lies in the presence and support of the divine.

Lord Krishna, with His infinite wisdom, provided Arjuna with the courage and clarity needed to face the Kurukshetra war. The Bhagavad Gita, a conversation between Krishna and Arjuna on the battlefield, remains a sacred text, offering timeless wisdom on duty, righteousness, and the nature of life and death. Krishna’s guidance helped Arjuna understand his duty as a warrior and the larger cosmic plan, enabling him to rise above personal dilemmas and fulfill his role in the grand scheme of things.
