MIDNIGHT FESTIVITIES & TRADITIONS DURING JANMASHTAMI AND REASON BEHIND IT

Janmashtami, the joyous celebration of Lord Krishna's birth, is typically observed over two days. Festivities reach their peak at midnight, believed to be the exact time when Krishna was born amidst heavy rains around 5000 years ago during the Dwapur Yug.

Midnight Celebrations of Janmashtami

The midnight hour of Janmashtami is marked with vibrant celebrations. Temples echo with the blowing of the Shankh (conch shell) and the chanting of "Jai Shri Krishna." Devotees gather to witness the Arti performed by temple priests, followed by the showering of flowers on the idol of Bhagwan Krishna.

One of the central rituals is the holy bath given to the idol with Panchamrit, a sacred mixture of Gangajal, honey, sugar, ghee, and curd. This mixture is later distributed as 'Prasad' among the devotees. The ritual cleansing is followed by offerings of food to Lord Krishna. Some temples present the 'Chappan Bhog'—an offering of 56 dishes, while others go even further, offering as many as 108 different dishes.

Sleepless Celebrations and Devotion

Many Hindus stay awake all night during Janmashtami, singing bhajans and participating in traditional Hindu songs. Food plays a significant role, with meals prepared from milk and curds, ingredients favored by Lord Krishna. However, some devotees choose to fast all day and night, breaking their fast at midnight to honor Krishna's birth.

Song, dance, and drama are integral to the lively and colorful celebrations. Plays re-enacting scenes from Krishna's early life are performed, adding to the festive atmosphere. In temples, images of Krishna are bathed and placed in cradles, accompanied by the blowing of the Shankh, ringing of bells, and chanting of holy mantras to venerate him.

Celebrate Janmashtami with devotion and style by donning a Krishna T-shirt, Hanuman T-shirt, Ganesh T-shirt, or an Anjaneya T-shirt. Embrace the spirit of the festival with a range of Hindu T-shirts, including Ganpati T-shirts, Lord Krishna T-shirts, Krsna T-shirts, and T-shirts featuring Krishna.
