SATYABAMA’S TULABARA: THE LESSON IN DEVOTION ON KRISHNA’S BIRTHDAY
Krishna’s second wife, Satyabama, was known for her striking beauty and immense wealth. As the daughter of a very rich man, she possessed an abundance of jewels and gold, which fueled her vanity and pride. Confident in her status, Satyabama believed she was the most beautiful and prosperous woman in all of Dwarka. Her vanity, however, was put to the test on one of Krishna’s birthdays.
Satyabama, eager to showcase her love for Krishna and impress the people of the town, decided to perform a grand tulabara ceremony. The tulabara is a traditional ritual where a person is weighed on a balance scale against offerings like butter, ghee, rice, or gold, and the equivalent weight is distributed to those in need. For this special occasion, Satyabama chose to weigh Krishna against gold, intending to distribute the wealth to the townspeople, thus displaying both her love for Krishna and the extent of her riches.
Confident in her preparation, Satyabama set up the tulabara with great pomp. As Krishna took his seat on the balance, a crowd gathered, eager to witness the grand display of wealth. Satyabama, certain of her calculations, had the gold ready. But as she placed the gold on the scale, to her shock and dismay, the balance did not budge—not even a fraction.
This situation was reminiscent of an incident from Krishna’s childhood when a demon tried to carry him away. Krishna, using his divine powers, became so heavy that the demon was crushed under his weight. Similarly, during the tulabara, Krishna subtly increased his weight, rendering Satyabama’s gold ineffective in tipping the scale.
Desperate and humiliated, Satyabama called for more gold, instructing her servants to bring every piece of jewelry she owned. One by one, she added her prized possessions to the scale, yet the balance remained unmoved. The once-proud queen, who had always flaunted her wealth, found herself in tears, overwhelmed by the shame of her failure in front of the entire town.
In her despair, Satyabama turned to Rukmini, Krishna’s first wife—a woman she often envied and felt threatened by. Swallowing her pride, she asked Rukmini for advice. Rukmini, calm and composed, simply walked over to a tulsi plant nearby, plucked three leaves, and placed them on the scale. Instantly, the balance tipped, lifting Krishna into the air.
This moment was a profound lesson for Satyabama and all who witnessed it. The weight of gold, no matter how immense, could not compare to the power of true devotion and love. Krishna had always valued pure love over material wealth, and Rukmini’s simple yet sincere offering of tulsi leaves carried more weight in Krishna’s eyes than all of Satyabama’s gold.
