THE DIVINE UNION: THE TALE OF LORD KRISHNA AND RUKMINI
Among the countless stories surrounding Lord Krishna's life, one of the most enchanting is the tale of his first wife, Rukmini. While many know that Rukmini was Lord Krishna's first wife, few are aware of the true story behind their wedding. Some consider Rukmini a reincarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, while others see her as Lord Krishna's dear friend. But who was Rukmini, and how did she come to marry Lord Krishna? Here's everything you need to know.
Rukmini's Early Life
According to legends, Rukmini was born in the kingdom of Vidarbha, the daughter of King Bhishmaka. She had five elder brothers: Rukmi, Rukmaratha, Rukmabahu, Rukmakesa, and Rukmanetra.
Rukmini: Reincarnation of Goddess Lakshmi
Rukmini is believed to be the reincarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu, as mentioned in several Puranas such as the Padma Purana, Vishnu Purana, and Bhagavata Purana.
How Rukmini Ended Up Marrying Lord Krishna
Folklore tells us that King Bhishmaka wanted his daughter Rukmini to marry Shishupala, the prince of Chedi. However, Rukmini had been devoted to Lord Krishna from an early age. Her brother Rukmi, a close friend of the evil king Kansa, was vehemently opposed to Lord Krishna. Although Rukmini's parents supported her wish to marry Krishna, her brother did not.
Unable to convince her brother, Rukmini secretly wrote a letter to Krishna, pleading with him to take her away. Upon receiving the letter, Lord Krishna immediately set out for Vidarbha with his brother Balarama. Upon reaching Vidarbha, Krishna battled Rukmini's brother Rukmi, defeated him, and eloped with Rukmini. The two were later married in Madhavpur, a village in Gujarat. This village is revered and commemorates the divine marriage of Lord Krishna and Rukmini.
Rukmini's Life as Lord Krishna's Wife
The Bhagavata Purana recounts an episode in which Rukmini was fanning Lord Krishna while wearing an expensive girdle and a dazzling necklace. Pleased, Krishna mentioned that many desired Rukmini and that he almost lost his kingdom rescuing her. He jestingly remarked that Rukmini was not far-sighted in choosing him over a Kshatriya like herself. Heartbroken by these words, Rukmini burst into tears and collapsed. Krishna then picked her up, explaining that he was merely joking. He praised Rukmini for her unwavering devotion.
Lord Krishna and Rukmini had ten sons: Pradyumna, Charudeshna, Sudeshna, Charudeha, Sucharu, Charugupta, Bhadracharu, Charuchandra, Vicharu, and Charu.
