THE ENCHANTING TALE OF LORD KRISHNA AND HIS PEACOCK FEATHER
Lord Krishna, often referred to as Kanah or Kanhaiya, is one of the most celebrated and beloved deities in Hinduism. As the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Krishna is worshipped by millions not only for his divine intellect but also for his captivating beauty. Among the many adornments that enhance his charm is the iconic peacock feather he wears on his head. But have you ever wondered why Lord Krishna wears a peacock feather on his head? The Srimad Bhagavatam offers a delightful story that explains this beautiful tradition.
The Story Behind the Peacock Feather
One summer morning, Krishna awoke in the serene Vrindavan forest. After a short nap, he decided to rouse his cowherd friends and call back the grazing cows. He began to play his flute, and the enchanting melody created by the divine instrument mystically attracted the peacocks of Vrindavan. Enthralled by the music, the peacocks gathered around Krishna and started dancing joyfully.
Krishna, the source of all dramatic arts, was delighted by their dance. Encouraging them with his gestures and smile, he further inspired the peacocks to dance with more fervor. Their joyous cries echoed through Vrindavan, and their synchronized movements created a mesmerizing spectacle.
Amidst the gathering, the King of peacocks made his way to Krishna, bowing down and expressing gratitude through his calls. Taking this as an invitation to join in, Krishna began to dance with the peacocks. The tempo of the dance increased, harmonizing with the melodies of Krishna's flute and the peacocks' calls.
The animals of Vrindavan gathered to witness this divine performance. Even Krishna’s flute seemed to play an enchanting melody on its own, mesmerized by its master’s dance. This celestial performance was a sight to behold from the Vrindavan hills.
After a long time, the peacocks grew tired and stopped dancing, but Krishna continued, lost in his divine joy. When he finally ceased, an enchanting silence fell over the forest. The King of peacocks approached Krishna, bowing in gratitude and said:
"Oh Supreme Lord! You have created a festival of bliss for which we will be eternally indebted to you! It is our duty to offer you ‘Gurudakshina’. I request you to accept our only opulence that is our feathers! Please wear them on your crown as a decoration."
With these words, the peacock dropped his divine feathers around Krishna. Krishna gracefully picked them up and tucked them into his turban. From that day on, the supreme godhead adorned himself with peacock feathers.
The Lesson from the Story
This simple yet profound story teaches us the importance of gratitude. We should always be thankful for even the smallest things offered to us. In return, we must offer the best we can with all our heart and devotion.
Lord Krishna teaches us to accept gifts with heartfelt appreciation, without analyzing their materialistic value. This practice not only shows respect towards the giver but also helps us value the small things in life. By not putting a price on the gift, we avoid getting entangled in materialism.
In essence, just as Lord Krishna expressed his gratitude for the peacocks' service by dancing to his tunes, we too must show gratitude and respect to one another.
