THE LEGEND OF SHIVA LINGA

THE LEGEND OF SHIVA LINGA

According to the Puranas, there was once a fierce dispute between two of the trinity of Hindu gods, Brahma and Vishnu, each vying to prove their supremacy. Horrified by the intensity of their battle, the other gods sought Shiva's intervention. To illustrate the futility of their conflict, Lord Shiva assumed the form of a colossal, flaming Linga (the phallic symbol of Lord Shiva) between Brahma and Vishnu and challenged them to measure its vastness.

Astounded by its magnitude, Brahma and Vishnu decided to find one end each to establish supremacy over the other. Lord Brahma transformed into a swan and flew upwards, while Lord Vishnu took the form of Varaha, a boar, and burrowed into the earth towards the netherworld. Both searched for thousands of miles, but neither could find the end.

During his upward journey, Brahma encountered a Ketaki flower. Exhausted and bewildered by his fruitless search, Brahma convinced Ketaki to testify falsely that he had reached the top of the cosmic column, where the flower had previously resided. With this deceitful accomplice, Brahma confronted Vishnu and claimed he had discovered the origin of the fiery pillar.

At that moment, the central part of the pillar split open, and Shiva revealed himself in his full glory. Overawed, both Brahma and Vishnu bowed before him and accepted Lord Shiva's supremacy. Shiva explained to Brahma and Vishnu that they were both born from him, and that the three deities represented different aspects of divinity.

However, Shiva was angered by Brahma's false claim. He cursed Brahma, declaring that no one would ever worship him, explaining why there are hardly any significant Brahma temples in India. Shiva also punished the Ketaki flower for its false testimony by banning it from being used in any worship.

The 14th day of the dark fortnight of the month of Phalguna, when Shiva first manifested himself as a Linga, is considered highly auspicious and is celebrated as Mahashivaratri, the grand night of Shiva.
