THE SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE OF OFFERING MILK, HONEY, AND WATER TO THE SHIVLING

THE SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE OF OFFERING MILK, HONEY, AND WATER TO THE SHIVLING

It is believed that those who worship Lord Shiva are liberated from the vicious cycle of life and death. According to Hindu beliefs, performing the Abhishekam ritual on the Shiva Linga with water, milk, honey, and other ingredients brings peace, happiness, and prosperity. But why is milk so essential in this ritual? Is milk pious or poisonous? Let's find out!

According to Hindu mythology and "The Sacred Literature of Shaivism" - Shiva Agamas, the worship of Lord Shiva begins with Abhishekam. This process involves bathing the Shiva Linga with water, milk, honey, and other edible ingredients.

It is believed that starting Lord Shiva's puja with Abhishekam increases the effectiveness of the ritual. Traditionally, the Rudra Abhishek of Lord Shiva is performed with milk, curds, honey, ghee, sugar, coconut water, holy ash, sandal paste, and fruit juice, to name a few.

Abhishekam is an ablution that energizes the Almighty. It is believed that water, acting as an electrolyte, transmits energy much faster than air. Thus, pouring holy water on the Shiva Linga releases powerful vibrations and energizes the deity. This helps cleanse negativity from the aura and aligns the mind and water as one.

Similarly, adding milk after pouring holy water is believed to nurture and nourish the brain and soul with goodness, compassion, noble thoughts, and a satvik mindset. Performing Abhishekam correctly is believed to help burn all bad Karmas accumulated over past lives. Finally, worshiping the deity with honey is said to bring sweetness to one's voice and thoughts.
