THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MILK ON NAG PANCHAMI: A SACRED OFFERING
Offering milk to snakes on Nag Panchami is an ancient practice in India and other parts of South Asia. Celebrated on the 5th day of the bright half of the lunar month of Shravan (July or August), Nag Panchami is an auspicious Hindu festival dedicated to the worship of snakes, considered divine creatures in Hindu mythology. People partake in this festival with great devotion and enthusiasm in India, Nepal, and various other regions. On this day, devotees offer milk, honey, flowers, and vermilion to snakes, seeking their blessings for the well-being of their families.
Snakes hold a significant association with Lord Shiva. Worshipping snakes alongside Lord Shiva, especially through the Rudrabhishek ritual on Nag Panchami, is believed to please Him greatly. In Hindu scriptures, snakes are referred to as Nagas and are often regarded as demi-gods. They are also seen as symbols of reproductive power and divine energy. According to folklore, snakes reside in Nagloka, a realm dedicated to them, reinforcing their demi-god status. Snakes are prominently featured in numerous Hindu scriptures and are deeply embedded in both mythology and human life. Recognizing their ecological importance, Hinduism gives them a revered place in religious practices.
A crucial legend explaining the significance of offering milk to snakes on Nag Panchami dates back to the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). During the quest for amrit (nectar of immortality) by the devas (gods) and asuras (demons), a deadly poison named Halahala emerged from the ocean, threatening to destroy the universe. Lord Shiva consumed the poison to save the world, but some droplets fell to the earth and were consumed by His snakes. The devas then performed the Ganga Abhishek on Neelkantha (Shiva) and the snakes to calm the poison's effects. Thus, Nag Panchami symbolizes this entire mythological process.
