Lord Shiva consumed the poison to save the world, but some droplets fell to the earth and were consumed by His snakes. The devas then performed the Ganga Abhishek on Neelkantha (Shiva) and the snakes to calm the poison's effects. Thus, Nag Panchami symbolizes this entire mythological process.
