THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SAWAN MONDAYS
The month of Sawan, also known as Shravan, holds a special place in the hearts of Lord Shiva's devotees. This sacred period is believed to be very dear to Lord Shiva, with devotees observing fasts on every Monday, known as Sawan Somvar, to honor Him with unwavering faith and enthusiasm. According to ancient beliefs, those who observe the Monday fasting are blessed with happiness, prosperity, and the fulfillment of all desires. Donations and charitable acts performed on these days are said to yield fruits equivalent to visiting the revered Jyotirlingas.
Devotees have various personal reasons for observing this fast. Some seek a long life, a happy married life, or the well-being and prosperity of their children. The Sawan Somvar Vrat is believed to bestow wealth, luxury, and the continuity of one's lineage. On these days, Lord Shiva is worshipped with Belpatra, as it is believed that He resides in the roots of this sacred plant. Hence, this puja is considered as meritorious as any pilgrimage.
Shravan is the month when the monsoon rains are at their peak in India, making it a time of renewal and reverence. The four Mondays of this month are especially auspicious for Lord Shiva's devotees. The Shravan Shiva Vrat, particularly the Shravan Somvar Vrat, is one of the most important religious customs associated with Lord Shiva. While some people fast only on Mondays, others observe a fast throughout the entire month, consuming specific foods like sabudana and fruits. Many devotees eat only one meal a day, often without salt, as part of their fasting ritual.
The significance of the Shravan Shiva Vrat extends particularly to women. Unmarried women observe this fast to find suitable husbands, while married women do so for the long life and well-being of their spouses, ensuring a happy marital life.
There are also scientific reasons supporting the practice of fasting during Shravan. Medical practitioners suggest that fasting during this month is beneficial for health, as the reduced sunlight and monsoon rains can slow down the digestive system. Consuming easily digestible vegetarian food and fasting helps detoxify the body, providing natural protection against waterborne diseases common during this season.
During Sawan, Hindu women adorn themselves in red attire, green and yellow bangles, and apply henna (mehendi) designs. This practice is believed to bring good fortune and is a favorite among women for its aesthetic appeal. The month of Shravan is not only about devotion but also about vibrant traditions that bring joy and blessings.
Shravan marks the beginning of many significant Hindu festivals, including Teej, Dashain, and Tihar. This month is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is deeply intertwined with the idea of marriage. It is believed that unmarried women who wear henna and green bangles and worship Shiva can find their ideal husband.
